BUNION EXPLAINED

Bunions, A Painful Bump at Big Toe

Bunions typically present as a bony bump at the base of the big toe joint, often with persistent pain. Common key symptoms associated with this foot deformity include:

  • Swelling, stiffness and redness around the big toe
  • Corns or calluses between toes
  • Restricted movement in the big toe
  • Big toe may lean towards the second toe
What Increases the
Risk of Bunions?
The abnormal protrusion of bone at the big toe joint is usually caused by prolonged stress on the foot. This compresses the big toe and causes it to lean towards the second toe. Factors that contribute to the excessive foot pressure include:
Ill-fitting shoes
Regular use of tight, narrow shoes like high heels can force the toes into unnatural positions, accelerating the development of bunions.
Genetic predisposition
People with inherited foot types e.g. flat feet, low arches or loose joints are more prone to bunions due to the abnormal foot and bone structure.
Arthritis
Certain types of arthritis, specifically rheumatoid arthritis of the foot, can contribute to the growth of bunions.
Abnormal gait
Abnormal walking patterns like overpronation where the ankle rolls inward excessively, can put further strain on the foot, increasing the risk of bunions.

Understanding Bunion Progression
While bunions begin as a gradual shift in the alignment of the big toe joint, this misalignment can worsen as the condition advances, resulting in a more pronounced bump, greater pain, and potentially other complications.
Mild
A small bump forms at the big toe joint, which may not be easily noticed by the patient and the skin may appear slightly red.
Moderate
The bump at the big toe joint becomes more visible, and the skin turns red in colour, causing pain or difficulty when wearing shoes or walking.
Severe
A prominent bump that may cause the big toe to overlap the second toe. At this stage, the bunion can cause severe pain, and potentially lead to other foot deformities.
